“Not sure what it is about Michigan these days, but the amount of really good bands coming out of there lately seems to be growing exponentially. It’s gotten to the point now where just hearing a band is from Michigan gets my ears perked up in a the way usually reserved for cities like Austin, Philadelphia or the DC area. The latest must hear band from Michigan is Grand Rapids based VALENTIGER, whose sophomore disc Oh,To Know! just dropped earlier this month [2011], and shows the band continuing their harmonic folk-rock and soothing alt-country mix.
A band that brings to mind later era THE REPLACEMENTS when they shifted from bar brawl rockers to more subdued, pensive folk-rock as well are more recent Americana based rock bands like LIMBECK, VALENTIGER mesh pop elements with unforgettable hooks, roots rock flavor, and endless vocal melodies to create a disc where each track takes on its own identity. There are really no two songs here that sound alike, as they span all genres from punk to rock to folk and according to the band are influenced by legends as diverse as R.E.M, THE KINKS and THE CLASH.
While VALENTIGER have already shared the stage with such notables as BEN KWELLER, THE WHIGS and COLLECTIVE SOUL, they’ve still remained an outfit residing in relative obscurity, probably in part due to their steadfast DIY approach to touring and releasing music. A record that took a year to make (each member of the band devoted every Wednesday to working on it), there’s no doubt in my mind anyone willing to give VALENTIGER a listen will find themselves enamored with their warm, textured songs that all at once sound familiar yet excitingly new. This is an indie band who needs and deserves to be heard.” – TheBykeRack.com

We have been hard at work planning the 2012 Short’s to Short’s Paddle. This year’s event will take place on April 27, 2012. Be sure to schedule that day off work and join us for one of our favorite events of the year. For anyone who doesn’t know, the Short’s to Short’s paddle is an event that allows participants to paddle through the rivers and lakes that connect our Bellaire Pub to our Elk Rapids production facility. The total 27 mile trip includes three lakes interconnected by three different rivers. For participants interested in a less challenging day on the water, multiple drop-out points are available.
Although we are planning several improvements for this year’s event, the basics will stay the same. As in years past, the event will remain free. We’ll depart from the public boat launch behind Fischer Insurance in Bellaire and paddle to the Village of Elk Rapids. Due to a fire at the Riverwalk Grill in Elk Rapids, we will conclude this year’s event at the public kayak launch near the Elk Rapids Chamber of Commerce. The post-paddle reception will take place at our Elk Rapids Production facility. Transportation will still be largely “on your own,” although one or more private entities may independently offer such services.
Register for this year’s event by clicking here. Please print out and sign the liability waiver and bring it to the event!
Remember to stay for the whole weekend because we will be celebrating our 8th anniversary at our Pub on Saturday April 28th!
If you have any question please email matt (at) shortsbrewing.com.
Stay tuned for further updates!
