May 2012

We bottled the Liberator today for statewide release. It is already available for sale at our pub and should reach stores within a week. As you can tell, Joe and Leah (and all of us at Short’s) are pretty excited.

With hundreds of beers in our portfolio, one of our most difficult tasks is figuring out which ones to put on the production schedule. Throughout the year, we use our original, 7 barrel Bellaire Pub Brewery to brew almost all of the beer that flows from our 20 taps. As such, we have a unique opportunity to provide our patrons with tried and true favorites alongside new experimental brews. Meanwhile, we use our 30 barrel Production Brewery in Elk Rapids to brew the beer that we release in bottles and kegs.

In developing our Elk Rapids production schedule, we take into consideration a lot of factors, including whether the brew was a hit with our patrons, whether it will provide something unique for Michigan craft beer drinkers, whether the beer created buzz at festivals and tap takeovers around the state, whether we personally enjoyed drinking the beer and would like to drink it after work, and whether the product would survive the trip from our brewery to your taste buds and still taste great.

There is much to be excited about in 2013, including first time releases of many IPAs and Hoppy lagers, like Hopstache, Beard of Zeus, Dan’s Pink Skirt, MMMKay, Pan Galactic, and Juicy Tree. For the first time, we’re also releasing Rye Not?, Goodnight Bodacious, Cerveza de Julie, Village Reserve, and Evil Urges.

If you don’t see your favorite Short’s Brew on the 2013 schedule, it simply means that we wanted to mix things up. In the future, we will continue to place certain specialty releases on hiatus and then bring them back. We undertake our ambitious specialty release program because we are interested in using our extra capacity not to take our flagships into other states, but to bring more interesting and unique brews to our loyal customers here in the Great Beer State.

Cheers!

This winter our brewers were inspired to create a new lineup of stouts that will be sure to amaze our pub-goers.  If you’re in the area, stop in to try these delicious new brews:

Yer My Boy Blue: A sweet blueberry milk stout made with 8 different malt varieties, a heap of real blueberries, and milk sugar. The intriguing fruit-filled aroma leads perfectly into the zippy, tart blueberry flavor, followed by the smoothness of roast mixed with delicate cream. A slight, dry bitterness resides in the finish thanks to the dark specialty grains. 7.5% ABV, 47 IBU.

Dirty Sturks (Nitrogen Infused Double Chocolate Stout): A dark black stout with an enticing chocolaty lace and sweet matching aroma. Milk chocolate and roasted malt fuse together creating the perfect marriage of flavors. Enhanced by a creamy, decadent mouthfeel. Mild cocoa like bitterness compliments this indulgent experience. 8.2 % ABV, 14 IBU.

Ben’s Asthma: A high ABV, pitch-black stout brewed with Medjool dates and a whopping malt bill. A sweet initial flavor is followed by a pleasant mouth-warming sensation caused by the high alcohol content quickly follows and lingers well beyond the finish. 11% ABV, 72 IBU.

Empress Catherine: A dark opaque stout with sweet aromas of molasses and black currants. Rich flavors of dark chocolate and heavy roast provide a malty balance to the pronounced bitterness in the finish, commonly found in big Imperial Stouts. 8% ABV, 55 IBU.

S’more Stout: A complex stout brewed with graham cracker, milk chocolate, marshmallow, and smoked malt. The rich, hearty flavors take turns on your tongue as the subtle graham aromas lead pleasantly into sweet flavors of marshmallow cream covered in milk chocolate, followed by a slight, lingering flavor of smoke. A flaming marshmallow garnish is strongly encouraged. 6.5% ABV, 30 IBU.

Uber Goober: You’ll taste the handful of peanuts that we brew into every glass, which are nicely complimented by rich aromas of chocolate. Creamy oatmeal, fused with peanut puree, combines perfectly with the caramel and roasted grain flavors of the malt. 6.4% ABV, 24 IBU.

If all of this is making you thirsty but a trip to Bellaire is not in your future, don’t worry. We’ve just released Cup A Joe coffee stout throughout the state in bottles and kegs. Cup A Joe is uniquely different from most coffee stouts in that we cram Higher Grounds roasted fair trade espresso beans into every facet of the brewing process. Prominent aromatics of malt, espresso, and cocoa are abundant and create a flavor robust with big malt characters fused with cream and coffee. The perfect morning nightcapper. 6.8% ABV, 18  IBU.

We love few things more than beer, skiing, and live music. That’s why we get together every year with our friends from Shanty Creek Resort for a Brew:Ski bash to celebrate the coming ski season and the unique proximity between Short’s pub and Shanty’s slopes. As it is already cold and snowy up here in Northern Michigan, we’re getting very excited for the coming winter.

The Brew:Ski Bash tradition includes free Shanty Creek lift passes for the first 100 guests, discount lift passes for everyone else, the release of our entire stout lineup, and a rockin’ night of tunes by Funktion, with special guests Circle of Heat. This year, Brew:Ski Bash falls on Saturday, November 24th and the festivities will kick off at 7:30 pm.

For 2012-13, our pub stouts will include tried and true favorites S’mores Stout and Uber Goober, plus several first time ever, pub-experimentals, including Ben’s Asthma (American Strong Stout), Yer My Boy Blue (Blueberry Milk Stout), Dirty Sturks (Double Chocolate Stout on Nitro), and Empress Catherine (Imperial Stout). We’ll have 20 total brews on tap, as always, plus other bottle selections.

Admission is $5 at the door.

Our next specialty release, Bludgeon Yer Eye (6.5 ABV/136 IBUs), is hitting store shelves throughout Michigan this week. Fruity and floral aromas will delight your nose as you bring a glass of this textbook India Black Ale to your lips. The deep black color will prepare your palate for an expected dose of rich, roasted malt flavors, but not the IPA-like hop bitterness that takes over and resonates with each taste. “Punishing your senses never tasted so good.”
