Seth Krause and Chris Michels met and came together on the musical project Mother Shrew in 2009 while attending Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Later when a bassist position was open, they recruited Upper Peninsula native Jon Letts, whom Chris had met in the NMU Jazz Big Band. After developing a following in Marquette, they branched out into Wisconsin and Lower Michigan, which led to an eventual move to Portland, Oregon, in 2012.
This move has had a great effect on their sound, according to Chris. Not being able to afford a drummer, they developed the use of live looping beat-boxing, largely demonstrated in their first full-length release “Back Pocket Surprises” in 2013. They are currently performing in the greater Oregon area and gearing up for their summer 2013 tour supporting “Back Pocket Surprises.”
