MMMKay

American India Pale Lager

MMMKAY is an India Pale Lager originally produced from the final runnings of Aww Jeah. Since then, its own malt bill has been developed so the good people of Michigan can have access to MMMKAY even when Aww Jeah hasn’t been brewed. The initial fragrances are of bold citrus fruit; guava, orange, and lemon. As the head settles, the aromas shift to fresh evergreen accents. Indicated by the light body and pale yellow appearance, the focus of the beer is on hops, rather than malt. An array of enjoyable American hop flavors shock the palate ranging from slightly fruity to an intense earthy pine. A bold bitterness dominates the finish, enhanced by the clean unobtrusive nature of its lager origin.

Origin Story

A few months back we were preparing to honor the 1,000 batch of our beloved best selling beer, the Huma Lupa Licious. Joe and Tony had devised a plan to commemorate this momentous occasion by creating one of the most awesomely hopped beers ever brewed at Short's. Essentially this beer would be a double Huma, meaning that we would use twice as much malt and hops found in a standard batch of Huma, but still only yield a single batch of beer (900gal). In order to do this, they would mash in twice by splitting the malt bill, allowing them to capture the most concentrated portion of the wort. Needing to only fill the kettle 1/2 way each time they mashed in, the were left with just under a 1/3 of the wort (the final runnings) from each mash unused. Therefore, they decided to still extract the remaining amount of wort from each mash in and place it into a separate process kettle at the plant, so they could make an entirely different batch of beer out of it. While we all took turns excitedly adding hops to the behemoth that would become Aww Jeah: Double Huma, it's illegitimate 1/2 brother, Mmmm Kay, was simultaneously quietly boiling away in the neighboring process kettle. Considering it's origin, Mmm Kay would inevitably be destined for greatness or forever live in the shadow of Aww Jeah, so Tony decided to give it a unique twist by making it a lager instead of an ale. In doing, we ended up with another amazingly tasty hop monster to add to our portfolio and fuel further questions of "when are you going to brew that one again?" or "will you ever bottle that one too?".
