Do you like fixing things when they break? Do I have a job for you! Short’s Brewing Company is looking for a Maintenance Team Member! The Maintenance team member is responsible for general building maintenance and construction projects in and around the SBC properties. The Maintenance Team Member will assist other departments and with other projects in addition to your primary duties with the Maintenance Team. No job is too big or too small; if it needs to be done, the Maintenance Team Member will work with their team to get the job done.


Maintenance employees should expect to work a variety of hours as the seasons affect business levels. Maintenance employees can expect to work days, nights, weekends, and even double shifts, depending on the season or staffing needs. Maintenance employees should prepare to work during all busy and holiday seasons.


Daily Duties and Responsibilities: 

    • Perform a walkthrough of the entire Bellaire pub operation. Identify any concerns with the facility and grounds and develop a plan for their repair.
    • Troubleshoot minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
    • Troubleshoot and repair minor issues with kitchen equipment, brewery equipment, HVAC-R equipment, chillers, ice machines, and other equipment located on premises.
    • Perform preventive building maintenance duties, replace seals, caulk windows and doors, repairs and replaces broken windows.
    • Perform routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks and urinals, fixing water leaks, leaking faucets, and water fountains.
    • Assist in construction projects as needed at any SBC location, including remodeling and new construction. 
    • Perform routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assist in repairing ballast and light fixtures.
    • Purchase (with approval from Finance) supplies, equipment, and materials necessary to complete projects.
    • Assemble and move furniture, hang pictures and bulletin boards, make name plates, move and set up tables and chairs.
    • Repair and replace door knobs or locks, repair door closers, patch holes in walls.
    • Paint interior and exterior walls.
    • Assist with long and short term projects at any SBC location.
    • Keep the pub ship shape, looking great, and operating at 100%.
    • General seasonal ground/lawn care, including mowing the lawn with push and riding lawnmowers, leaf blowing, trimming shrubs and pulling weeds, gravel and drive repair, etc.
    • Snow shoveling, blowing, and plowing as needed.
    • Draft and send a daily project report at the end of each shift.
    • Operate heavy equipment such tractors, scissor lifts, man lifts. 

    Assistance with Evening and Weekend Maintenance Issues:

    Maintenance workers are sometimes asked whether they can come in at non-regularly scheduled hours to fix things. You are not on call and may decline to assist, and this will not be held against you. If a Maintenance employee receives a request to report to an SBC location to take care of an emergency situation outside of the employee’s normal work hours, and the employee is willing and able to work, the employee will be paid for their travel time to and from whichever location they are reporting to, in addition to their time spent working on the emergency. Overtime and shift differential pay rates apply as appropriate. Evening and weekend hours will be scheduled in advance with the Maintenance Director as needed, and any deviation from what is agreed upon will be considered late/tardy per the Short’s Attendance Policy.

    Other Requirements:

    • General familiarity with the brewing process.
    • Hands-on mechanical skills and experience.
    • Maintenance management skills and experience.
    • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
    • Excellent communication and planning skills.
    • Knowledge of OSHA and MIOSHA requirements and regulations and a proven ability to apply that knowledge to all maintenance activities. 
    • Calm, flexible, and able to work through emergencies.
    • Ability to simultaneously coordinating a wide range of activities. 
    • Follow all SOPs and safety protocols.
    • Practice good communication with supervisors and colleagues, written and verbal.
    • Wear safety equipment at all times while working.
    • Ability to write, draft, and send emails.
    • Maintain an organized and clean office work space; keep organized PC files and records stored in correct place. Contribute to IT organization.
    • Must possess a valid Michigan Chauffer’s license and complete an MDOT physical exam every 1-2 years as required.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Consistently lift and occasionally carry 75 pounds to chest height.
    • Frequent bending, stooping, pushing, lifting, kneeling and reaching.
    • Frequently reach with hands and arms.
    • Be on his or her feet for the entire work shift, up to 12 hours.
    • Walk up and down a flight of stairs several times per day.
    • Climb ladders or scaffolding and work at heights for prolonged periods of time.
    • Able to work in hot and cold environments and in proximity to chemicals used to clean brewing equipment.
    • Able to operate a forklift and physically able to load and unload trucks.
      • Every Maintenance employee must complete and pass a Forklift Operator Evaluation exam.
    • Able to write and draft emails.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
