Chris Sterr has been a staple on the Northern Michigan music scene for the last 12 years. A dynamic, intense guitarist with an honest and soulful voice, Sterr got started with his Detroit-based band Bump in 2001. They released four albums and toured the US relentlessly for nearly a decade before he relocated to Traverse City. Since then, Sterr records with his experimental studio trio-musical think tank The Curtis Street Ensemble plays in the Traverse City/Chicago-based indie folk rock band Stolen Silver, as well as with his electric and eclectic improvisational rock trio, The Pocket. Sterr also performs solo, utilizing his Boomerang III looper for self-accompaniment. His musical influences include a wide array of artists ranging from Wilco to Delicate Steve, Wayne Krantz, and Steely Dan, to name a few. Recent collaborations, performances, and session work include Traverse City artists Levi Britton (Stolen Silver), Jeff Haas (Big Fun), Blake Elliott, John Paul, as well as other Michigan artists such as Detroit-based Doegoe, Rick Chyme, and members of Earth Radio and The Accidentals in Matt Butler’s Everyone Orchestra at Electric Forest 2022.
Sterr is currently compiling a solo album, “Letters From Home” Vol 1, 2, and 3, from a prolific period of creativity from 2020 to 2022. Meanwhile, Sterr is also working on The Pocket’s first official album release, and continuing session work with various local artists. Chris Sterr currently resides in Traverse City with his wife, Joleen, and Cairn Terrier, George Henry.
