Origin Story

I'm sure many of you are familiar w/ this beer by now, but if you have not had a chance to try it, I strongly encourage you to. It was a Joe Short original and has been brewed for almost 7 years now. Almost every brewery has a summer time wheat beer that they release to coincide w/ the warmer weather experienced this time of year. Wheat's are typically lighter bodied ales that have a wonderful refreshing ability, but due to their Belgian or German yeast strains, they tend to offer a unique spice complexity found in the nose as well as in the over all flavor profile. Trditional wheat beers also have a distinct fruitiness, mosty typically associated with bannana flavors. Sometimes these versions of Wheat beers are garnished w/ lemon or orange wedges to add to the refreshing light nature of the beverage and serve as a wonderful compliment to the overall experience found from drinking these beers. Nicie Spice is a unique wheat in the sense that it utilizes an American Wheat yeast strain. This strain does not offer any sort of spicy esters or flavors to the beverage, allowing us to manipulate the expected spice profile to our liking. Therefore, Joe abandoned the typical clove like or nutmeg spice qualities of the traditional wheat's and decided to give it a "Short's" twist by adding 3 kinds of peppercorns and ground coriander. He also added lemon and orange zest to the beer to more or less save consumers a step, giving them all the pleasant citrus aromas and refreshment with out having to go through the extra steps of adding the fresh fruit themselves. The addition of zest also helps create a slightly hightened sweetness that would normally be quite subdued if this were simply a straight forward American Wheat beer. The end result is a crisp refreshing beer that has an excellent aroma of spice and citrus, followed by similar flavors throughout. It is truly a complex light bodied ale.
