Black Cherry Porter

Porter Brewed with Northern Michigan Sweet Black Cherries

Dark, velvety, sweet, and toasty. Black Cherry Porter entered the Short’s-iverse as part of our Imperial Beer Series in 2007. We coulda dumped black cherry puree into a light, refreshing beer, but Joe had an itch for something more robust. The deep, rich flavors of an Imperial Porter are the perfect compliment to our regions national export, and Black Cherry Porter was made and quickly became a Pub favorite.

Origin Story

Originally part of the 2007 Imperial Beer Series, which Joe firmly believes was the turning point for our company and was the catalyst for propelling us to the next level of brewing greatness. When the original series was launched, all of the beers were individually bottled by hand and had a tag hung around it that told a brief story about the beers creation according to Joe Short. Bourbon Black Cherry Porter Desctiption: Bourbon barrel aged for 9 months, this porter is brewed with sweet black cherries. Related Beers: Black Cherry Porter, Publican Porter, Bourbon Wizard. ABV 8%, IBUs 52, OG-1, FG-1. Black Cherry Porter is one of our oldest beers. Some of the earliest batches date back to our 2004 brew logs, when it was called Rocky Top Cherry Porter. Obviously, cherries are synonymous with Northern Michigan, but rather than make a light fruity summertime beer with our regional fruit, Joe chose to play on the dark fruity notes sometimes found in rich Porters. Cherries are also a natural compliment to rich chocolaty and roasted coffee flavors, another reason why this beer worked so well and quickly became a pub/Short's favorite. Last year, we decided to barrel age Black Cherry Porter for the first time! As you can imagine, this yield was extremely low. So far it has been featured only in small amounts at the MBG Summer Beer Festival, and then given to an establishment like Palate, due to our long standing relationship with Joe and the amazing support he has given to Short's over the years. The barrel aging added notable bourbon flavors to the beer, lending rich vanilla tones and charred oaky qualities, creating favorable accents to the existing flavors.
