Origin Story

Cup A Joe is the first official stout ever brewed at Short's Brewing Company. Prior to Cup A Joe, our darkest beer styles were porters (Chocolate Wheat and Black Cherry Porter), but more stouts quickly followed w/ Mystery Stout getting brewed 3 days later. Cup A Joe dates back to Joe's head brewer days at Jackson brewing company where he dabbled w/ a similar recipe in November of 2001. However, early home brew logs indicate a "Java the Stout" got brewed sometime in November of 2000. Cup A Joe is brewed w/ locally roasted fair trade espresso beans from Higher Grounds: coffee bar and roastery, based out of Traverse City, MI. Cup A Joe is a true Coffee Cream Stout, in that we add powdered milk sugar during the brewing process to give it a slight creaminess throughout. That's approximately 1.5oz of coffee and 3.2oz of milk sugar per gallon! A cornerstone of our stout series, released every November during our annual Brewski Bash party, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The original artwork was done by Fritz Hortsman, where the beer was referred to as "Cuppa Joe"
