Devil's Lettuce

Wet Hopped India Pale Ale

Devil’s Lettuce is a wet-hopped India Pale Lager made with fresh hops from the Michigan Hop Alliance. The nose is full of big hoppy aromatics of citrus zest and subtle spice. Low malt flavors allow for an array of hoppy attributes ranging from fruity lemon to an earthy grassiness, with an instant bitter impact. A clean lager finish amplifies the overall bitterness which resonates across the palate.

Origin Story

For many years early on in the company's history, we were unable to even brew wet hopped beers. It wasn't until 2009, 5 years after Short's opened for business, that we had a small scale emerging hop industry taking place close enough to home that would allow us to obtain fresh "wet" hops, that could be used to make Harvest Ales. Most people familiar with our company have come to know and anticipate the arrival of our Kind Ale each fall, since we first brewed it four years ago. Typically brewed with hops from local hop growers at Northern Michigan Organics in Empire MI, our wet hopped beer of choice has always been brewed in Elk Rapids as a medium bodied ale, comparable to an American Pale Ale. For the first time since we began brewing these fun beers using hops that were literally picked only a few hours before we added them to the boil, the brewers decided to make a Bellaire exclusive batch, creating a brand new wet hopped beer to add to our family of brews. Seeing as we were already venturing down a new creative road at the pub by brewing with fresh hops for the first time ever on the Bellaire brew system, it was decided that we might as well dabble in some new hop varieties, as well as change up the style of beer. For the pub's first ever wet hopped beer, the brewing staff acquired some hops from a different local hop farmer, Empire Hop Farms. The two varieties we obtained from Empire Hop Farms were called Brewers Gold and Cascade. Rather than brewing medium bodied ale with these hops varieties from this new local grower, the Devil's Lettuce is a wet hopped lager. Creating a brand new beer with distinct hop characteristics and uniquely different qualities when compared to the Kind Ale.

Name Origin

As for the name, apparently when the guys went to visit the new hop farms in Empire to pick up they fresh hops they had to offer, the intense nature of being in such close proximity to all of the freshly picked hops left everyone smelling suspiciously like something else.
