Origin Story

Modeled off of the Brewers Association's stylistic guidelines for Session Beers, this rapidly growing category is providing many brewers the opportunity to take their favorite styles and do what ever they want to them, as long as they have an alcohol percentage at or below 4.1%. The importance of this category is that the goal should be to reach a balance between the style's character and the lower alcohol content. Drinkability is a character in the overall balance of these beers. Basically, just because the alcohol is lower, doesn't mean that flavor has to be sacrificed. Especially when it comes to hoppy beer styles. Malt bills will inevitably be decreased to reduce the amount of fermentable sugars. Yeasts will be substituted to minimize their flavor impacts in order to allow more subtleties to show through. The end result it quite awesome! To think that we can be drinking a beer that tastes incredibly similar to a Huma and has a huge impacting presence of a Hangin' Frank, but only an ABV of 3.5%. The prolonged possibilities of drinking such an ale are endless. Prolonged Enjoyment was originally created by Tony Hansen at our Bellaire brewing facility on May 12, 2011. By skillfully using 5 malt varieties and 4 different kinds of Hops, Tony was able to accomplish all the impacting characteristics of an IPA (aroma, flavor, and bitterness), while keeping the ABV to an astounding 3.5%. Originally called Session Pale, a more "Shorts-ified" title took some time. Finally, Joe Short proposed the name Prolonged Enjoyment, implying that you could indulge in this beer's hoppy goodness without feeling the full effects of a more traditional, higher alcohol content, pale ale. After seeing how quickly this beer sold at the pub and how well it was received at numerous beer fests/events throughout the state, it was decided that Prolonged Enjoyment would be an appropriate addition to our Specialty Bottle release schedule for 2012 (Although if you ask Tony, it was simply because we had a great Session IPA in Ale la Reverend to drink in the summer time, and he felt we could really use another hoppy session beer to drink in the spring. Our wants are the state's gain, I guess). On March 6, 2012, three batches of Prolonged Enjoyment were brewed at our Elk Rapids production facility. Yielding approximately 780 cases, 48 1/2 barrels, & 15 1/4 barrels Tony always felt that this beer was classifiable as a "Short's" version of a Session Pale Ale, but it's IBU content could easily make it an IPA compared to most industry standards. Therefore, on the bottled version you will see it labeled as a Session IPA. The label art for Prolonged Enjoyment was done by our very own "Handsome" Robert Cutmore. Originally created for use as the imagery seen on beer festival signage, Rob did such an awesome job capturing Joe's vision of what the appropriate label for this beer should be, that it was decided we should showcase the same artwork on the labels for the 12oz bottle version as well. T$ ain't drinking no more monkey piss during his softball practice! Why? Because we brewed a session pale ale of course!
