It’s always a great day to be (and drink) Good Humans

Good Humans – a really, really great Double Brown Ale known and loved as a Short’s seasonal release is now on store shelves. This brew is much more than just a dark and dry hopped Short’s offering – it is the embodiment of so many of the things we strive to achieve throughout the shorts-i-verse and in our community.

Named for the good humans who’ve influenced Joe Short and the trajectory of Short’s Brewing Company, the Good Humans concept was illustrated by one particularly good human, our friend Seth Bernard. Another fantastic human being, artist Brad Kik, Co-Director of the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art, & Natural Design (ISLAND), worked with Joe and Seth to create the final label artwork.

To say that Seth and Brad are simply local artists and musicians is an enormous understatement. Pillars in our community, Seth and Brad helped to establish organizations like Earthwork Music and ISLAND. They, alongside many other determined and inspiring individuals, work tirelessly to support creative and sustainable endeavors in Northern Michigan.

In the summer of 2014 we invited Seth Bernard and Joshua Davis to join us on an episode of Short’s Cast. Needless to say, this episode is what we term “podcast gold.” Discussing the early days of Short’s and the early days of their careers, Joe, Joshua, and Seth detail their professional lives and the philosophies that guide them daily including the importance of craftsmanship. This is an episode all about honing your individual craft and working towards a better future for our community. You can listen to the full episode here while enjoying a pint of Good Humans.

Good Humans (8% ABV – 40 IBU) was created to showcase one of Briess Malting Company’s new malt varieties. Originally planned as a one-time thing, it quickly became one of our big successes. Good Humans is a Double Brown Ale made with Carabrown Malt, and then dry hopped with Simcoe hops. The brew has sweet malty esters that are met by huge toasted caramel and toffee flavors. The finish is dry with a bouquet of hops.

This beer and these artists embody the spirit of “localism” – a philosophy that we seek to promote with our Michigan Only, Michigan Forever brews. At Short’s we work each and every day to not only be producers or consumers, but to be citizens focused on building our community in Antrim county and throughout the state, and we hope our friends, philosophies, and brews encourage you to do the same. Remember, it’s always a great day to be (and drink) Good Humans.
