Pear Saison with Profuse Hoppiness: A Collaboration Brew with Half Acre Beer Co., Chicago IL
Captain Fantasy is a Pear Saison with profuse hoppiness. Light-bodied with a bright, clear, golden color, this Saison is brewed with pear to complement the aromas of spice and the fruity fragrance of Sorachi Ace hops. Captain Fantasy has flavors of sweet pear and tart lemon and a lively amount of carbonation to cleanse the palate. The overall fruitiness of Captain Fantasy is interrupted by an assertive hop bitterness that dominates the finish.

Origin StoryThis was our latest collaboration brew with 1/2 Acre Brewing Co. out of Chicago Illinois (same guys we did Freedom of 78' guava IPA with) brewed back on August 3rd, 2011. Seeing as this beer was going to be available in the summer, the brewers decided to make a seasonally appropriate Saison, but wanted to dress it up a bit, so they added pear and some very elusive hops from Japan called Soriachi Ace. These beers have some cool historical roots that date back to when they were predominately brewed on farms in Northern France and Belgium as the main source of refreshment for the farm hands in the summer time. Seeing as this style could range in flavors depending on where they were being brewed and what local ingredients might be added to them, this beer leaves itself fairly open to having certain non-traditional ingredients added to it that may accentuate "acceptable" flavors found naturally in the beer depending on what attributes the brewer was going for. Saisons can be fruity or spicy, mildly or intensely bitter, moderately to heavily dry, and contain higher levels of carbonation. With this wide array of flavor possibilities we chose to focus on the refreshing fruity options for this beer style, hence the additions of pear and a hop variety that is commonly described as lemony.
