Gone Commando

Gone Comando is an amber colored Vienna lager brewed with red currants. Light grain and yeast aromas disguise the initial tart and sweet shock provided by the use of specialty malts and dark fruit. A slight bitterness in the finish is accompanied by some herbal and tea flavors with lingering fruity accents.

Origin Story

In case you were wondering, this really was a quote from one of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies of all time, 1985's Commando! What does this have to do with the new beer that we have going on tap you might ask? Nothing! However, it was the first thing that popped into Ryan Hale's mind when he finally got the chance to brew our first Vienna Lager ever, called Gone Commando. The story behind this beer is pretty simple and straight forward. Ryan has been one of our biggest driving forces behind getting us to brew many traditional European beer styles. Ranging from Rauschbiers to Northern German Pils to more Belgium beer styles than you can count on one hand, it's pretty easy to say that Ryan appreciates our historical brewing roots and often enjoys paying homage to them by recreating many of these traditional beer styles. Let's not forget that Ryan has also been immersed in American craft brewing for years and also enjoys embracing the creativity that has come to define the craft beer scene in this country on a global scale. Therefore, when Ryan got the "green light" to brew a true to style Vienna Lager, he couldn't help but also toss in some none traditional brewing ingredients that he had been wanting to brew with for some time, black currants. Our Vienna lager, Gone Commando, was brewed in the traditional sense with a large amount of Vienna malt, but in true American or Short's non-traditional fashion, the addition of black currants gives it a twist unlike any historical version before it. Give it a try if you happen to come across it on tap at the pub, and see if this one-time popular beer from Vienna provokes you to also think about their once popular Hollywood star, as it did for Ryan.
