Old Baldy

Belgian Golden Ale brewed with tangerine peel, finger and honey

An Experimental Belgian Golden Ale made with Orange Blossom Honey, Ginger, and Tangerine Peel. Old Baldy has a hazy yellow glow and aromatic complexities of fruity bubblegum, spice, and banana taffy. Fresh citrus flavors of tangerine are complemented by a snappy ginger bite, along with a cleansing effervescence. The finish contains a notable bitterness that’s slightly peppery and dry.

Origin Story

This beer was originally brought to us by our long time second shift brewer in Elk Rapids, Aaron Smith, back in early April of this year. Aaron has been responsible for many great Short's brews like Rye Not, Your My Boy Blue, and Sweet Tatters, but it had been a while since we saw a new one from him, so his latest creation was certainly a welcomed arrival. Dubbed Old Baldy: Belgian Golden Ale brewed with tangerine peel, ginger, and honey, A-a-ron's most recent brew comes with an array of fun flavors and a great story regarding the origin of it's name. Old Baldy also marks the 5th time a Short's brew was created specifically as a symbolic "wedding ale", which Aaron celebrated on October 4th, hence the triumphant return of this beer to the pub. Check out Aaron's story below on how Old Baldy the beer and the name came to be.

Name Origin

The name Old Baldy has great significance. The sand dune were we got engaged is known as Mt. Baldy, but if you spend any amount of time in Pentwater the locals will quickly remind you to call it by its original name, Old Baldy. Old Baldy is part of Charles Mears State Park in Pentwater MI (http://www.lovepentwater.com/old-baldy.html) and is a place that I have many great memories. My family has been camping at the state park for 35+ years. From the top of the dune you look out over the camp ground, the beach, the channel to Pentwater Lake, and Lake Michigan. The park has also been the spot of two other engagements in my family.
